Lake Will is a tarn that fills a glacial feature (now mostly eroded) called a cirque.
Lake Will fills a glacial geological feature known as a cirque, cwm or corrie. It is created by a glacier grinding out and weathering (freeze-thaw) the rocks at the base of a mountain to form a depression. Crater Lake that you have passed already on the Overland Track is another example. Debris (or till) in the ice may abrade the bedrock underneath the frozen lake and pluck out rock that becomes incorporated into the glacier. Rock material in the glaciers are deposited down stream in terminal and lateral morraine as the glaciers melt. Glaciers were common in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area area about 20000 years ago. Temperatures were very cold and Tasmania was gripped by an ice sheet in its centre. Since these times temperatures have gradually warmed, rainfall increased and vegetation has returned. As a result of the climate change there has been weathering and mechanical erosion of the original steeper sides of the cirque until it forms the relatively flat landscape we see today. If you walk further along the track you will reach a waterfall. This glacial feature is known as the lip and has been formed by glacial morraine (deposits) and bedrock partially damming the flow of water from Lake Will. The origins of the naming of Lake Will are not clear - any suggestions?
1. What is the name of the mountain that towers above Lake Will?
2. What texture is the material on the beach deposits at ground zero mainly comprised? Is it sandy, silt or clay? (clue: rub the beach material between your fingers is it gritty (sand), smooth (clay) or somewhere in between (silt)).
3. How did the material on the beach originate?
4. There are boulders on the beach - how do you think they got there?
5. What is the name of the hard black rock that you pass over shortly after you turn off from the Overland Track to Lake Will?
