As I waited for my grandfather one night after his VFW meeting at the American Legion Hall across the street I decided that there needed to be a cache on this little park like triangle. This is in honor of my grandfather and all our veterans. My grandfather served in the Navy in WW2 on the SS South Dakota. This little park faces the American legion hall in Baldwin. The building from what we know was built some time in the 1920's as a house and sometime in the late 30's or early 40's it was purchased for the use of the American legion. The apartment above was my brothers first home. The hall was were my parents had their wedding reception in 1969, both my children celebrated their christening days and over the years there were countless family parties here. Every Christmas season my cousins and I would come here to see Santa (who was actually Poppop ) arrive on the fire truck to give out toys. On Friday nights we would go to family night here and now at almost 89 years old my grandfather still faithfully attends his VFW and Legion meetings. So have a seat, sign the log and if you see a veteran, be sure to thank them!
2/22/17- Park has been redone and the benches have been removed. The location of the cache is just a bit east of its original location. Sadly, Poppop, Albert J. O'Neill passed away this January at the age of 93. He left behind his loving wife of 70 years, his 5 sons, 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. I miss him very much and hope to keep their cache in his memory
