Kilcashel gets it's name from the Irish (cill: a church; caiseal: a stone enclosure). The cashel is located down on the sea edge, but the cill has been disputed.
It has been suggested that this graveyard was the graveyard for the Shanaghan church (see cache name "Shanaghan Lough View") as there has been no evidence pointing to the existence of any church within or close to the enclosure, but the name suggests otherwise and St Conall's cross lies just a hundred yards due west of the graveyard.
The strongest evidence that there was a church comes from T.C. McGinley, writing in 1867, who states: "Kilcashel is...beautifully situated on the side of a rocky hill, clothed with soft fresh verdure, and rising above the southern margin of Luachros Mór Bay. The ruins of the church are still traceable, and the place is even yet used as a burial ground. Near it stands the cross of St. Conal."
Kilcashel graveyard is still used today, so please be respectful of this.
The cache is not inside the graveyard, NOR IS IT IN THE STONE WALL SURROUNDING THE GRAVEYARD!!!!!!
The cache is a small round black container, very like a 35mm film canister - bring your own pen.
There is not a lot of parking here and the road is single track virtually all of the way.
In my opinion, the views from the graveyard over toward Rosbeg and Carn are almost like heaven on earth...
