Geocache Description:

A 2-stage cache hidden in the Beaver Dam Sanctuary in Katonah.

The hunt for this two-parter will take you to sections of the Sanctuary on both sides of Beaver Dam Road, which runs between Route 22 and Harris Road. Suggested parking is on the shoulder of the road, just west of the "15-ton" bridge. Figure on a walk of about two miles if you approach both stages by the suggested routes. (TRAIL MAP)

This is a test of hidden text.

Stage 1. The listed coordinates will lead you to the first stage of this multi. The recommended trailhead is approximately .15 mile east of the bridge, on the north side of Beaver Dam Road. You may be tempted to enter via the trail opposite the recommended parking, but unless you are a strong swimmer -- or at least a stalwart wader -- that route is discouraged. The trailhead suggested above is the driest path to the first stage. The trail you will be following eventually circles the cache location, and you may be tempted to bushwack when the satellites report a distance of 500 feet or so. Better to stick to the trail until you reach an intersection at the waypoints listed below. Turn right. When you are about 180 feet from the cache, leave the trail and angle up hill to the hide. You are looking for a small bottle containing a very important message. The message will direct you to Stage 2.

Final Stage. After returning to Beaver Dam Road, turn right, walk along the road until you find a trail to the left (before reaching the bridge.) Most of the trails here are wide enough for horses, or cachers walking two abreast, but for the final few hundred yards to the cache you'll follow a narrower, lesser used pathway. This is a fairly typical hide. Please secrete the cache at least as well as you found it, or even better. There is was a lottery scratch-off ticket for the first finder.

More caching. There are two other caches in this Sanctuary. Depending on water levels, you should be able to reach Great Pencil Exchange (GC11CPA) either before or after you find Stage 1. As an alternative, there is a trailhead off Route 22, more-or-less opposite the Harvey School, and a couple of wide spots along the shoulder where you can park. To hunt Insta-cache(GC21GQJ), look for a trailhead on the north side of Beaver Dam Road near the recommended parking, west of the bridge.

The fine print.Most of the trails within the Sanctuary have yellow and black "BRLA" markings, but the trails are not otherwise blazed. BRLA trails within the Sanctuary are open the public. A few of the BRLA trails do enter posted private property. Also, some trails are marked as being closed from March 15-June 15, to control erosion. None of the restricted or private trails were were used to hide either stage of the cache, but you may encounter them if you explore the Sanctuary beyond the cache hunt. Expect to see horses during your hike. The best thing to do is to step off the trail and stand quietly until the rider passes. Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed.
