Geocache Description:

Please note the above coordinates take you to a carpark, in Stepaside - Hertiage Park. You are invited to join us on a Ramble at 2.00p.m. on Tuesday of the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, to walk along part of the route the Miners would have taken in the 19th century. This event is being hold as part of The 2012 Annual South Wales Event - GC3CPPP

The walk will start in the Hertitage park in Stepaide - and the first part of the walk is on a user/family friendly flat path that leads to Wiseman's Bridge, from here we will take a footpath up to Sardis, and then back down to Stepaside. The circular walk is roughtly 3 miles., and for those, that don't want to make the full circular walk, there is a pub in Wisemans Bridge, you can stop off and rest there and just do the first half of the walk (and get the beer in). After the walk we will meeting, at the pub at 5.00 for refreshment and a rest and time to recover.

Geologically the area forms part of the South Wales Coalfield, and the belt of coal running across from Saundersfoot to Landshipping, Hook and Nolton was know as the Daugleddau Coalfield. Records show coal mining dating back to at least the 14th century, with coal forming the major county export by 1700. However there was no attempt to exploit the potential of the local anthracite - amongst the finest in the world and much favoured by Queen Victoria for its smokeless quality.
