Geocache Description:

This series is a circular walk round the Pit at Kellingley, mostly flat along footpaths, Bridleways & minor roads with some railway & Canal crossings.

In 1984, the Yorkshire area had a total of 56 collieries. Kellingley is now one of only a few that are left.
In 1984, 15 of the collieries were in the Wakefield district, 11 in the Rotherham district, 10 in the Barnsley district, 9 in the Doncaster district, 6 in the Selby district, 3 in the Leeds district and 2 in the Kirklees district. The Yorkshire Area of the Coal Board also included Manton colliery, which was geographically in Nottinghamshire; it closed in 1994.

The largest mine in Yorkshire was Brodsworth whereas the smallest was Kinsley.

Kellingley’s two main shafts are each almost 870 yards (800 m) deep. One shaft is used for the conveyance of men and materials, and the second shaft for the conveyance of mineral extracted from the Beeston Seam at a rate of up to 900 tonnes an hour. Kellingley supplies local power stations and also produces some housecoal quality coal; larger sized coals of higher calorific value.

The Beeston Seam has been accessed as a result of a £55 million investment programme which is expected to extend the life of the mine until at least 2015. Further reserves are expected to be accessible in the Silkstone Seam thereafter, which are anticipated to extend the life of the mine to 2019.

Cache is a Cammo Medium Screw Top Tub with logbook & pencil & room for swaps.
