Geocache Description:

ACTUAL CACHE IS NOT AT LISTED COORDINATES!

BLIND MAN'S BLUFF is a series of six caches along with a Final. I regret that the actual cache locations are relatively simple and do not take you to scenic locations...the information gleaned by solving each puzzle cache is the intent of this series. Each cache will present various photo’s and submarine information…and ballads...and, each cache puzzle will become increasingly difficult to solve. Please bring your own pen.

The Turtle was the world's first submersible with a documented record of use in combat. It was built in Old Saybrook, Connecticut in 1775 by American Patriot David Bushnell as a means of attaching explosive charges to ships in a harbor.

On September 7, 1776, the first US military submarine (Turtle) tried and failed to sink the British warship HMS Eagle, flagship of the blockaders in New York harbor. And so began the long and illustrious history of the US Navy Submarine Service. Since the Turtle, the submarine has evolved greatly and has proven itself to be one of the greatest deterrent forces in the entire US Military arsenal. No other nation can boast the quality of submarines that exist in the US Navy thus no other nation can compete with the US Navy at sea. Arguably, were it not for the US Navy’s Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, you would most likely be reading this geo-cache information in Russian…if you had not died in a nuclear holocaust!

Если «триггер» был вытащен в любое время во время «холодной войны», это то, что вы сейчас читали. Опять же, вы можете поблагодарить подводные лодки FBM за вашу свободу сейчас!

The most significant evolution in submarines was seen following WWII and the diesel submarine when nuclear power became the primary source of propulsion. A nuclear submarine is a submarine powered by a nuclear reactor. The performance advantages of nuclear submarines over "conventional" (typically diesel-electric) submarines are considerable: nuclear propulsion, being completely independent of air, frees the submarine from the need to surface frequently, as is necessary for conventional submarines; the large amount of power generated by a nuclear reactor allows nuclear submarines to operate at high speed for long durations; and the long interval between refueling grants a range limited only by consumables such as food. Current generations of nuclear submarines never need to be refueled throughout their 25-year lifespan. *note...A single uranium fuel pellet the size of a fingertip contains as much energy as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 1,780 pounds of coal or 149 gallons of oil.Below may be seen a simple diagram of a submarine nuclear power plant.

As shown above, Reactor technology is pretty simple - the reactor generates heat, and the pressurized cooling water (U.S.) metal (Russian) that flows around it (shown in red) is passed into a steam generator, which is nothing more than a large chamber where the coolant flows through in a pipe and water (shown in blue) from a secondary water feed is pumped into the chamber and onto the hot coolant pipes, flashing it instantly into steam. The pressurized steam (shown in white) is then used to power Turbine Generators, which in turn are connected to reduction gears connected to the main propeller shaft as well as to turbines that provide electricity for the ship. After the steam is used, it passes into a condenser, which turns it back into water, and it's pumped again back into the steam chamber to again start the continuous loop.

The coordinates to each cache of the series may be found by answering the questions below. Upon finding each cache, make sure that you note sequentially the number on the inside lid of each cache as you will need this information to reach the Final. Smooth sailing! As an update to this cache (now in it's 6th year...3/21/2018), I would ask you each to listen to this new Tommy Cox ballad as a great introduction to Blind Man's Bluff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybz_0JwuH58

The coordinates for BLIND MAN'S BLUFF #1 are N47 01.ABC W122 47.DEF where

1. ABC equals the hull number of the US Navy’s first nuclear submarine minus 291.

2. DEF equals the hull number of the first submarine to travel under the North Pole from the east minus 88.
