The earthquakes Christchurch has suffered from since 2010 onwards have also affected the waterways of the area, destroying habitat needed for our native fish. Each cache will take you to a waterway, or a water-themed street. The series was released into the wild during New Zealand Sea Week 2012.
Whitebait
Whitebait is a seasonal delicacy enjoyed by New Zealanders in the late spring. Whitebait is made up of a number of our native junvenilles but the two most common are Inanga and Koara.
Young Inanga that manage to avoid the whitebaiters’ nets will grow into silver slender fish up to 9cm long. They don’t have any scales on their gold flecked skin. They like to spawn in streamside vegetation, which can include exotic grasses. Inanga like slow-moving lowland streams.
Koara are the second most prevelant junvenille species that are considered whitebait, in New Zealand. Koara like shady, bouldered forest streams, so it is just as well that they are excellent climbers and use their flattened fins to climb up waterfalls to reach these areas. They usually grow to 16-18cm but can grow as big as 30cm and have greenish-brown patterning on their skin.
