St Mary’s Church, Kidwelly is one of the finest parish churches in Carmarthenshire and indeed in West Wales. This ancient and historic abbey church has survived the ravages of time and been a place of prayer for centuries. Along with the magnificent castle, it dominates the skyline, and those who worship here are rightly proud of it. Its crowning glory is the slender and beautifully proportioned spire. Dominating the centre of town and pointing heavenward, it witnesses to the central place traditionally held by the Christian faith in this community. But will it always be there?
Three times in its history the spire has collapsed, and been rebuilt. Today it is again under threat. The top part needs to be taken down and reconstructed, the remainder badly needs re-pointing, and the whole structure of the tower has to be made weatherproof. When looking toward the spire from the bypass or railway it is easy to forget just how big the spire is.
St Mary’s, Kidwelly is part of the parish grouping of Cydweli and Llandyfaelog. The 3 churches of St Mary’s, Kidwelly, St Teilo’s, Mynyddygarreg, and St Maelog’s, Llandyfaelog form the grouping, which is part of the deanery of Emlyn in the Diocese of St Davids which is itself part of the Church in Wales.
