If we follow the trail of Huszar Gal, we meet the oldest continually (since 1561) working printing office of Hungary.
A debreceni Alföldi Nyomda jogelődjét 1561-ben alapította Huszár Gál református vándorprédikátor, a nyomda így az ország legrégebben folyamatosan működő ipari üzeme. A török hódoltság és a három részre szakadt ország politikai és gazdasági zűrzavarában a cívis "városállam" gazdasági erejére támaszkodva élte át a legnehezebb időket is, és vált a magyar kultúra és főleg a nyelv erős várává.
A nyomda eleinte magántulajdonban állt, de az ismétlödö csödök után a város saját tulajdonába vette. A törökök kiűzése után a város még több mint száz évig meg tudta örizni saját nyomdajanak monopoliumát, ami lehetővé tette az egész világon elismert magas szinvonalu munkat, a fémlapokkal diszitett, szines nyomásu pergamen kötést debreceni kötésként ismerte a világ.
Az ipari forradalom költségei és a monopolium elvesztése után a nyomda nem tudta megőrizni teljes önállóságát, szövetkezett legnagyobb megrendelőjével, a református egyházzal, és közös tulajdonban tartották fenn a nyomdát az 1949-es államosításig.
A szocialista tervgazdálkodás a debreceni nyomdának tulajdonképpen jót tett, mert az elöírt feladatokhoz megkapta a szükséges eszközöket, így vált ismét a legnagyobb magyar könyvgyárrá.
Az 1990-es rendszerváltás után, bár akkor az egész könyvszakma válságos helyzetben volt, az Alföldi Nyomda - immár privát vállalkozáskönt - alkalmazkodott a megváltozott körülményekhez, és a könyvgyártás terén elért vezető pozicióját azóta is fenntartja.

The printing press of the city of Debrecen was established in an era (the turkish conquest in the XVI. century), in which the life of a person and the success of enterprises were in danger alike. The printing office was founded by protestant itinerant preacher Huszar Gal and the press working continually since 1561. The Debrecen Press having a strong economic background of an independent and prosperous city in the country that was torn into three pieces, set out a speedy development. It was as the oldest working industrial plant that was the most significant depository of the Hungarian language and one of the last resorts of Hungarian culture. It shared this role with the ancient Reformed College of Debrecen, which contributed to the expansion of the activity of the printing press with orders and with the works of engraver students. Besides, there were the bookbinders, who at that time formed a guild, and whose products prepared of embossed, coloured parchment ornamented often with pearls and armoured metal pieces known to specialist around the world as the Debrecen binding.
The private enterprises running the printing press in its early years often went into bankruptcy, therefore the city acquired the ownership of the "officina" which was shared with its main customer, the Reformed Church only in the 20th century. As a consequence of this, after nationalisation, the printing house of mixed ownership was assigned the task of mass producing books and became the largest book producer of the country. Meanwhile the Alföldi Printing House was also top-ranking in introducing new technologies.
The processes after the change in political systems were act in favour of the plant specialised in mass production, but by the time of privatisation Alföldi Printing House overcame the obstacles endangering even its existence and remained the oldest and most significant book producer as it was for centuries.
