Congrats to MSWahoo on FTF and claiming a September 11 memorial geocoin!

On September 11, 2001 when the Twin Towers fell most of those pieces were sent to be preserved in a Ground Zero museum – most pieces, but not all. On February 11, 2011 a piece of a 4000 lb. steel beam made its way from interstate 77, down Cherry Rd., and into Rock Hill to the York County Fire Training Center to its new home. There it will stay as part of a memorial to the 343 fire fighters, 23 NY police officers, 37 NJ police officers, 2346 civilians, and countless other emergency and medical personnel that lost their lives on that day giving of their selves to help others.

The memorial sits on a 5 sided platform which represents and honors those killed at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. There are flagpoles and two spotlights shining upward representing the Twin Towers. There are 3 black granite markers holding the steel beam on the memorial with the first having the World Trade Center etched on it, the second has the number 343 on it for the number of firefighters who were killed in the 9/11 attacks as well as the fireman’s prayer on the back, and the third signifying the all those who lost their lives that day.

We hope that you will take a moment to stop and pay respect at the memorial as we will all “Remember” what happened on that day, September 11, 2001, and the countless lives that were lost, but also enjoy this great piece of history we have right here in Rock Hill.
