Geocache Description:

Although interior renovation has started on the old Grand Theater the cache questions, which all pertain to the outside of the building, are still applicable and the answers will lead you to the container location.

The coordinates take you to the historic Grand Theater.

The Grand Theatre opened in December of 1920. The theatre was built by a group of Alton businessmen at a cost of about 150,000 dollars. They held a contest to name the new theater, and three people came up with the name for the grandest theater in the area. Local events were staged there, as were vaudeville shows along with the movies. The Grand was the largest theater in Alton at the time seating around 1,400 people. Later renovations reduced the seating capacity to about 1000 patrons. CinemaScope filming technology introduced wide screen movies and was installed at the Grand Theatre in 1954.

In March of 1977, after a double feature of "The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat" and "Heavy Traffic," the Grand put out a sign reading "Closed Temporarily." However it never reopened.

The Grand Theatre is the only classic movie house in Alton remaining mostly intact whereas the others which are still standing today have been repurposed for other uses and no longer resemble their former selves.

At this location answer some simple questions to determine the final location of the container which is an easy walk from the theatre. All answers to the questions are determined by viewing the front of the building. The picture in the description does not represent the current details of the building.

The cache container is located at:

N 38° 53. A B C

W 090° 11. D E F

All answers to the questions are determined by viewing the front of the building.

A = Number of times GRAND is displayed on the Marquee + 2
B = Number of times GRAND is displayed in the brickwork at the top of the building +5
C = Number of boarded up openings above the Marquee + 1
D = Number of water meter covers in sidewalk
E = Number of trees in front of the building + 2
F = Number of letters in the name above the boarded up openings over the Marquee + 1

Checksum of A, B, C, D, E, and F = 28

The location of the container is within 50 feet of the Grand Theatre.

The container is a Camo Painted Bison Tube Container that holds only a log sheet.

Bring a writing instrument to sign the log – this is a small log sheet so sign with date and name only.
