Geocache Description:

A magnetic nano that tells a tale.

================================================================

The Tale : The Whitehead family was a well-known and wealthy family in the 1800’s. They have left a legacy in Bury which includes Whitehead Park, a monument in Kay Gardens and the clock tower within this garden.

Robert Whitehead (born 1823) trained as an engineer and a draughtsman. He attended the Mechanic Institute in Manchester. Robert is considered the inventor of the torpedo, which he first developed in 1866. Whitehead left his fortune to his granddaughter Agathe Whitehead.

In 1911, Agathe married Georg Ludwig von Trapp. Georg was a submarine commander in the First World War and so legitimately used the title Captain. Incidentally he had also fired torpedoes in anger.

Captain von Trapp and Agathe had seven children in the next 11 years. Unfortunately this breeding programme was cut short by Agathe's death in 1922. Reportedly from scarlet fever (though exhaustion may have contributed).

In 1924 the Trapp family moved to a new home in Salzburg.

In 1926 one of the children was ill so the Captain hired a tutor from the nearby Nonnberg Abbey, this was Maria Augusta Kutschera. She must have done something right, because in 1927 Captain von Trapp (then 47) married for a second time, to Maria (then 22). The breeding programme then re-commenced and Maria had three children, bringing the total number of children in the Trapp family to ten.

In 1935 the Captain von Trapp invested his money in an Austrian bank. Unfortunately this failed, wiping out most of the family’s fortune. Maria, eventually, took charge and began to make arrangements for the family to sing at various events as a way of earning a living. Thus the Trapp Family Singers were born.

And the rest, as they say, is history.
