DEAD TREE SWAMP
Welcome to Western Jersey! This series of caches has been placed by the recently formed Western Jersey Cachers (WJC) group to introduce the caching community to our wild western region of NJ.
This cache is hidden in a swampy area (at least in early March) near the trail. Bring your own writing implement, and please replace exactly as found. Also, please do not remove the cache container completely from its spot; just unscrew the top to access the log sheet.
These caches are located at the Eames Preserve in Hopewell Township, which was purchased in 2008 by the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The 75-acre property was used for farming until the 1970s. Since then, most of the meadows have succeeded into forest while a few meadows are maintained by periodic mowing to provide for wildflowers, butterflies and birds. The preserve has a 1.6 mile narrow loop trail with a gradual 50’ elevation change. The first section of the trail follows an old road as it passes the site of a former house and outbuildings. The trail also runs along a section of the Woodsville Brook and winds through a mature grove of beech trees. Parts of the trail can be muddy, especially after heavy rains. Please stay on the established trails as much as possible, keep pets leashed, and do your part to preserve this beautiful tract of land by remembering to Cache In – Trash Out.
Please note that hunting is allowed in the Preserve on certain dates during the Fall and Winter; check the notice at the entrance to the Preserve for more detailed information.
