The Essex County Environmental Center is hosting the 7th Annual Earth Day Celebration, Saturday April 21, 2012 from 11 am to 4pm. The theme for this year’s celebration is the same as last year, “Getting Back to Nature” and expect this to be the best Earth Day Celebration ever!
Northern New Jersey cachers (NNJC) will be participating in the Earth Day celebration with a Introduction to Geocaching 101 demonstration table. This event is a great chance for those who know nothing or little about Geocaching, to learn and experience this growing family activity. We're hoping that some of you "old timers" will come out enjoy in the Earth Day celebration and help share your love of Geocaching. NNJC is offering this workshop to introduce participants to the basics of geocaching and understand the geocaching web site.
New to Geocaching?
Geocaching, a global game of treasure hunting using longitude and latitude coordinates, is a fun filled adventure for all ages. With a GPS receiver, and Internet access, you are ready to explore and search for a "geocache".
NNJC will instruct the basics needed to enjoy this eco-friendly sport including suggested equipment, the web site, how to search for a cache and types of caches. You will enjoy the thrill of the hunt but the real discovery is the countless locations of natural beauty and historical interest you will find that you never knew existed.
Experienced geocachers, your assistance is needed.
We like to pair participants with a volunteer to head out on the trail. We will be setting up a series of temporary caches to demonstrate various hides and containers. Please post a note and email me if we can count on you to volunteer, as little or as much time as you can offer. We need you to make this a success!! Bring your GPS and give back to the community!!
Come learn about the sport, meet other cachers, hear stories about favorite hides and teach someone else your tricks. This is open to the public to promote geocaching. There will be a couple temporary caches placed closer to the event so bring your GPS and help others find their FTF!
Everyone is welcome to stop by the Geocaching table and come out and celebrate nature on this nationally recognized day dedicated to our very own planet, EARTH! Activities include a live honeybee demonstration, nature walks, a composting demonstration, canoeing, kayaking, container gardening, fishing, music, and more. Don’t miss the green vendors’ tent and information tables of local environmental groups, outdoor enthusiasts, and other earth-minded organizations working in our bioregion. Snacks and refreshments included.
