Geocache Description:

Sweetgrass basket making has been part of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant communities for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who came from West Africa, basket making is a traditional art form which has been passed on from generation to generation. Today, it is one of the oldest art forms of African origin in the United States. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, an old village and modern suburb on the north side of Charleston Harbor, enjoys the distinction of being the only place where this particular type of basketry is practiced. Here, the descendents of slaves from West Africa continue the tradition. Today most basket stands are still built along the shoulder of Highway 17 North. (This text is abridged from the Charleston County Public Library)

This cache is a replacement of my original Sweetgrass Baskets cache. The previous basketmaker, Harriott, who hosted a cache for me passed away. I dedicate this cache in her memory.

To find this cache you will have to visit a roadside sweetgrass basket stand. This particular stand has plenty of parking a safe distance from Hwy. 17. It's essentially a park and grab, but if the basket makers are present you will be exposed to a unique Mt. Pleasant, SC art form.

If the basket makers are present, you should not need to disturb any of the baskets or other merchandise to find the cache.

Although this cache could be located anytime, I suggest you stick to daylight hours as you might look suspicious around the stand at night.
