Questa multi-cache si svolge interamente sul Monte Tre Croci, una delle cime (1124 mt. s.l.m.) del massiccio del Campo dei Fiori, sopra Varese, attraverso un facile sentiero nel bosco e richiede in tutto circa 45 min. Sono consigliate scarpe da trekking.
Da Varese seguire le indicazioni per “Campo dei Fiori” e percorrere la tortuosa strada che arriva quasi in vetta. Parcheggiare al waypoint PARK e proseguire a piedi (la strada è pedonale) verso il piazzale del belvedere (WP1, domanda n.1), caposaldo della Linea Cadorna, complesso di fortificazioni militari edificate nel periodo antecedente la Prima Guerra Mondiale per scongiurare una possibile invasione tedesca attraverso il territorio della vicina Svizzera. Sul piazzale del belvedere fa bella mostra di se un cannone smilitarizzato della Prima Guerra Mondiale. Alle spalle del piazzale sorge una piccola caserma, postazione radio dell’Aeronautica Militare.
Tornare indietro per un centinaio di metri, prendere il sentiero N.1 in direzione “Prima Cappella” e proseguire fino alle “Tre Croci” (WP2, domanda n.2), monumento composto da un altare e tre maestose croci in cemento che dominano uno spettacolare panorama. Il monumento fa parte della “Via Sacra”, sorta di sentiero commemorativo dedicato ai caduti “senza croce” di tutte le guerre, ove sono installate una serie di lapidi dedicate ai vari corpi militari.
Scendendo dalla scalinata della “Via Sacra” si arriva facilmente alla balconata (WP3, domanda n.3), dal quale si può ammirare il fascino decadente del dismesso “Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori”, a cui è dedicata questa cache, maestoso edificio costruito tra il 1909 e il 1912. L’albergo richiamava turismo d’elite anche straniero e proseguì la sua attività, attraverso periodi di alterne fortune, fino alla fine degli anni ’60, quando venne gradualmente abbandonato. Nelle vicinanze del Grand Hotel è possibile vedere dall’esterno anche la vecchia stazione della funicolare Vellone-Campo dei Fiori e il Ristorante Belvedere.
Ogni anno nel periodo di Ferragosto, nel piazzale antistante l’hotel, si tiene la tradizionale “Festa della Montagna”, organizzata dal Gruppo Alpini di Varese, che con un ricco stand gastronomico e interessanti manifestazioni culturali, richiama sulla montagna migliaia di persone. In particolare, il giorno di Ferragosto, viene celebrata una manifestazione all’altare delle “Tre Croci” a ricordo dei caduti di tutte le guerre.
IMPORTANTE: tutte le strutture del Grand Hotel, compreso ristorante e funicolare, sono PROPRIETA’ PRIVATA e sono presidiate da un custode che abita in loco. E’ quindi severamente VIETATO avventurarsi all’interno delle stesse anche a causa della pericolosità di alcuni manufatti.

NOTA: allo STEP1 è stato temporaneamente rimosso per manutenzione il cannone e la relativa targa descrittiva. L'anno di posa del cannone, necessario a risolvere lo STEP1, è il 1978.

This multi-cache is set entirely on Monte Tre Croci, one of the peaks (1124 m. above sea level) of the massif of Campo dei Fiori, over Varese city, through an easy trail in the woods and takes around 45 min. Hiking shoes are recommended.From Varese follow the signs for "Campo dei Fiori" and follow the winding road that goes right to the summit. Park to “PARK” waypoint and walk (the road is for pedestrian only) to the square of the viewing point (WP1, question No. 1), the cornerstone of the “Linea Cadorna”, a complex of military fortifications built in the period before the First World War to prevent a possible German invasion through the territory of Switzerland. On the square there is a demilitarized cannon of the First World War. Behind the square is a small barrack of Italian Air Force.
Go back for about one hundred meters, take the trail No. 1 in direction "Prima Cappella" and walk to the "Tre Croci" (WP2, question No. 2), a monument consists of an altar and three crosses constructed in concrete that dominate a spectacular view. The monument is part of the "Via Sacra", a sort of memorial trail dedicated to all deads "without cross" of all wars, in which are mounted a series of tombstones dedicated to various military corps.
Coming down the stairs of the "Via Sacra" is easy to get to the balcony (WP3, question No. 3), from which you can admire the decadent charm of the abandoned "Grand Hotel Campo dei Fiori", which is dedicated this cache, majestic building constructed between 1909 and 1912. Many foreign tourists came to the hotel that continued his activities, through periods of ups and downs, until the late '60s, when it was gradually abandoned. Near the Grand Hotel you can see from the outside even the old funicular Vellone-Campo dei Fiori and the Belvedere Restaurant.
Every year in mid-August, in the square opposite the hotel, there is the traditional "Festa della Montagna", organized by the “Gruppo Alpini Varese”, with a interesting cultural events and a food stand, that attracts thousands of people. In particular, in August 15, there is an event celebrated at the altar of the "Tre Croci" in memory of the deads of all wars.
IMPORTANT: all the buildings of the Grand Hotel, including restaurant and funicular, are PRIVATE PROPERTIES and are manned by a caretaker who lives on site. Is therefore strictly FORBIDDEN to venture inside of the same also because some artifacts are dangerous.
