A little slice of history: Gilruth Neck
The remnants of the road cutting winding up past GZ was part of the original road linking early Darwin to Fannie Bay Gaol. It is believed to have taken its name from Dr Gilruth, the first Administrator of the Northern Territory.
Originally a single lane, it was a notorious bottle neck (where motorists could blow their tops or lose their heads) before it was replaced in 1965 by the new road, now called Gilruth Avenue.
