La cache si trova presso la cima del Montorfano, un solitario enorme blocco di granito arrotondato dall’erosione del ghiacciaio che anticamente scorreva nella valle del Toce. Dalla cima si gode uno dei più bei panorami sul golfo Borromeo ma si spazia a 360° infatti si ha la possibilità di ammirare il lago di Mergozzo, la valle che conduce al lago d’Orta (anch’esso visibile in lontananza) e la parte bassa della Valle Ossola. Molto suggestiva anche la vista che porta dal Monte Faiè ai Corni di Nibbio, al Lesino e al Pizzo Proman.
Interessanti anche le costruzioni militari che si trovano nei pressi della cima, risalenti al periodo della prima guerra mondiale. Esse fanno parte di una linea difensiva che il Generale Cadorna (da qui il nome “Linea Cadorna”) fece costruire lungo tutto il confine svizzero temendo che i tedeschi e gli austriaci, ignorando la neutralità svizzera, potessero da qui iniziare un’invasione del territorio italiano. Per la sua unica posizione strategica il Montorfano costituiva la sede del comando e un importante punto di osservazione per le operazioni che interessavano la Valle Ossola.
E’ possibile arrivare alla cache in vari modi, ve ne descriverò tre. In tutti i casi indossate scarponcini da montagna (o scarpe da tennis alte), abbigliamento adeguato e portatevi una sufficiente scorta d’acqua e di cibo. In estate scegliete le ore mattutine (più fresche).
1.
Partenza dalla località Montorfano (vedi waypoint1). Se provenite da Verbania seguite le indicazioni per la stazione ferroviaria (posta in località “Verbania Fondotoce”), la strada che sale la trovate subito dopo la svolta a destra che porta alla stazione. Se invece provenite da Gravellona Toce proseguite in direzione Verbania, superato il ponte sul fiume Toce dopo 2,2 km sulla sinistra troverete la strada che porta a Montorfano. Infine se utilizzate l’autostrada A26 vi consiglio di imboccare l’uscita “Verbania”, in questo caso vale quanto detto per chi proviene da Gravellona Toce.
Lasciate l’auto nel parcheggio nei pressi della chiesa di San Giovanni Battista.
E’ la via più breve con il dislivello in salita inferiore (500 mt) ma non fatevi ingannare… il sentiero che sale alla cima, seppur ben segnato, non è dei più agevoli e in alcuni casi è decisamente ripido. Non si tratta quindi di una semplice passeggiata domenicale…
2.
Partenza nei pressi di Gravellona Toce, vicino al ponte sul fiume Toce (vedi waypoint2). Se provenite da Verbania seguite le indicazioni per Gravellona Toce e 2,3 km dopo il sottopasso della stazione ferroviaria troverete l’incrocio della strada che porta a Mergozzo (proprio prima del ponte sul fiume Toce), se invece provenite da Gravellona Toce proseguite in direzione Verbania e la strada si trova subito dopo il ponte sulla sinistra. Infine se utilizzate l’autostrada A26 vi consiglio di prendere l’uscita “Verbania”, in questo caso vale quanto detto per chi proviene da Gravellona Toce.
Posteggiate l’auto lungo la parte iniziale della strada per Mergozzo (attenzione a non intralciare il traffico o occupare vie di accesso ai fondi agricoli)
Si deve affrontare un dislivello di 600 metri su una vecchia mulattiera militare abbastanza ben conservata che sale a stretti tornanti sul versante sud-ovest del monte. Personalmente la preferisco al sentiero descritto al punto precedente in quanto la ritengo affascinante, panoramica, inoltre non presenta particolari difficoltà e la pendenza è più dolce. Forse per la sua esposizione (dovuta solo alla ripidità del versante che attraversa e non alla pericolosità) non è adatta a chi soffre di vertigini.
3.
Giro ad anello con partenza da Mergozzo (vedi waypoint3). Se provenite da Verbania seguite le indicazioni per Domodossola/Autostrada A26 e prima della grande rotonda di Fondotoce imboccate sulla destra la strada per Mergozzo, se invece arrivate da Gravellona Toce (o usate l’autostrada A26) potete usare la strada descritta al secondo punto.
Lasciate l’auto in uno dei numerosi parcheggi del paese (che merita una visita).
In questo caso la lunghezza della gita aumenta leggermente così come il dislivello da affrontare. Potete scegliere il senso con cui effettuarlo ma vi consiglio quello antiorario in quanto farete il sentiero più “ostico” in discesa.
Dal waypoint3 parte un comodo sentiero (A58) che sale fino a incrociare (waypoint 4) la mulattiera descritta al secondo punto, una volta saliti alla cima potete scendere seguendo a ritroso il sentiero descritto al punto 1, infine appena sotto la località Montorfano (waypoint1) seguendo la strada che porta alla Stazione di Verbania troverete l’inizio di un sentiero chiamato “Sentiero azzurro” (waypoint5) che vi riporterà in un’ora circa a Mergozzo.
Il nascondiglio della cache è visibile dal sentiero (attenzione ai babbani). Mi raccomando rimettetela a posto bene in quanto il colore argento potrebbe renderla facilmente rintracciabile! Consiste in una scatola di alluminio che contiene: logbook, 3 matite, temperino, foglio di avviso (tutti da non asportare) e un container per una microcache vuoto (questo è per voi). ATTENZIONE: per piacere rimettetela a posto accuratamente in posizione VERTICALE, ABBIATE RISPETTO DELLA FATICA DELLE PERSONE CHE HANNO COSTRUITO LI’!!! NON DEVASTATE O DISTRUGGETE – GRAZIE

The cache is located at the top of Montorfano (literally “orphan mount”), a lone huge block of granite rounded by erosion of the glacier that once flowed into the valley of the Toce river. From the top you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Borromeo Gulf but also at 360°, in fact we have the opportunity to admire the lake Mergozzo, the valley leading to Lake Orta (also visible in the distance) and bottom of the Ossola Valley. Another interesting sight that leads from “Monte Faiè”, “Corni di Nibbio”, “Pizzo del Lesino” and “Pizzo Proman”.
Also interesting are the military buildings that are located near the top, dating from the First World War. They are part of a defense line that General Cadorna (hence the name "Linea Cadorna") was built along the swiss border, fearing that the germans and austrians, ignoring the neutrality of Switzerland, could be here to begin an invasion of the Italian territory. Because of its unique strategic position the Montorfano was the command headquarters and an important observation point for the operations that concerned the Ossola Valley.
You can get to the cache in various ways, there will describe three. In all cases wear walking boots (or “high” tennis shoes), suitable clothing and bring a sufficient supply of water and food. In summer, choose early morning hours (cooler).
1.
Start from Montorfano village (see Waypoint1). If you are coming from Verbania follow the signs to the train station (located at "Verbania Fondotoce"), the road up the find immediately after the right turn that leads to the station. If you come from Gravellona Toce continue towards Verbania, crossed the bridge over the river Toce after 2.2 km on the left is the road that leads to Montorfano. Finally, if you use the A26 highwayI recommend you take the exit "Verbania", in this case the same as for those coming from Gravellona Toce.
Leave your car in the parking near the church of “San Giovanni Battista”.
This is the shortest route with less ascent (500 meters) but do not be fooled... the path that climbs to the summit, though well marked, is not of the easiest and in some cases is quite steep. So this is not just a Sunday stroll...

Start by Gravellona Toce, near the bridge over the river Toce (see waypoint2). If you are coming from Verbania follow the signs for Gravellona Toce and 2.3 km after the tunnel under the railway station you will find the intersection of the road that leads to Mergozzo (just before the bridge over the river Toce), but if you are from Gravellona Toce continue towards Verbania and the road is just past the bridge on the left. Finally, if you use the A26 highway I recommend you take the exit "Verbania", in this case the same as reported for those coming from Gravellona Toce.
Park the car along the initial part of the road for Mergozzo (be careful not to obstruct traffic or access roads occupy agricultural land).
He faces a vertical drop of 600 meters on an old military trail that climbs fairly well preserved in tight switchbacks on the south-west face of the mountain. Personally I prefer this to the path described in the preceding paragraph because I think the fascinating overview also presents no particular difficulties and the slope is gentler. Perhaps because of its exposure (only due to the steepness of the slope and not to the dangers) is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo.

A round trip starts from Mergozzo (see waypoint3). If you are coming from Verbania follow the signs for Domodossola/A26 highway and at Fondotoce, before the large roundabout, turn right into the road to Mergozzo, if you arrive from Gravellona Toce (or use the A26 highway) you can use the way described in the second period.
Leave your car in one of the many parks in the village (which is worth a visit).
In this case the length of the excursion increases slightly as the ascent. You can choose the way in which to do, but I recommend you do the trail counter-clockwise so you will meet the most "stubborn" path downhill.
From waypoint3 starts an easy path (A58) which rises up to cross (waypoint 4) the trail described to the second point, once climbed to the top you can get off in the reverse path in step 1, then, just below the Montorfano village (Waypoint1) following the road that leads to the station of Verbania, you will find the beginning of a trail called "Sentiero azzurro" (waypoint5) which takes you back in about an hour to Mergozzo.
The hiding of the cache is visible from the path (watch out for muggles). I highly recommend you put it back well in place, because the silver color would make it easy to trace! It consists of an aluminium box that contains: logbook, 3 pencils, sharpener, advice sheet (all to not remove) and an empty container for a microcache (this is for you). ATTENTION: please put it back in place carefully in a VERTICAL position, HAVE RESPECT FOR FATIGUE OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE BUILD THERE! NO DEVASTATE OR DESTROY - THANKS
