La caverna è l’entrata di una galleria scavata nella roccia che, durante la prima Guerra mondiale era usata come deposito delle munizioni. Fa parte del Sentiero 7 del Parco Spina Verde – Storia delle tattiche militari – percorrenza circa 2 ore. http://www.spinaverde.it/index.php?pag=279. Una parte del sentiero è asfaltata, ma il resto è nel bosco, quindi sarebbe meglio indossare scarpe adatte. Il cache può essere raggiunto con la macchina, ma non è facile parcheggiare vicino e la strada non è sempre accessibile (vedi foto) perché va solo al agriturismo L’Agrifoglio. Si può mangiare li (le viste su Monte Rosa sono bellissime) e lasciare la macchina nel loro parcheggio, ma il posto è molto popolare e quasi sempre va prenotato prima. Quindi è meglio lasciare la macchina nel parcheggio del municipio e fare la salita a piedi o lasciare la macchina a WP1.
Attenzione quando si entra nella caverna perché è spesso fangoso, ma è più importante fare attenzione al drago a meno che non sia uscita a fare la spesa! Cercate bene perché dato la roccia e gli alberi i coordinati GPS forse non sono affidabili al 100%. Portare una matita siccome il cache non ha spazio. Vi prego di riposizionarlo esattamente. Non dimenticate di scrivere i numeri per il bonus cache.
IL RICOVERO
Nel complesso di Sasso Cavallasca sono rilevabili numerosi ricoveri di varie dimensioni, ma non tutti sono visitabili a causa degli smottamenti che ne hanno ostruito gli ingressi.
Il ricovero principale, denominato “Galleria di deposito”, con apertura principale sulla strada militare Cavallasca-Sasso Cavallasca, poco sopra l’ex caserma della Guardia di Finanza, è scavato nella gonfolite (la roccia di cui è formata la collina della Spina Verde) e si compone di un locale rettangolare, con la volta conica, sul cui fondo si apre un camminamento che immette in una trincea di comunicazione diretta verso le postazioni della Maiocca. I ricoveri servono per dare rifugio e riposo ai soldati, che hanno prestato servizio nelle trincee di combattimento o che attendono di entrare in azione, e per proteggere e conservare intatti materiali e munizioni.
Sono di solito ricavati sul rovescio delle alture. I ricoveri possono essere in caverna, se scavati direttamente nella roccia o in galleria se scavati in terreni d’altra composizione e poi rivestiti, soprattutto nella volta con materiali idonei per impedire gocciolamenti d’acqua dovuti a infiltrazioni. L’acqua di percolazione, raccolta in piccoli canaletti scavati lungo le pareti del ricovero, è, opportunamente convogliata verso l’esterno. Altrettanta attenzione è dedicata alla ventilazione dell’ambiente, che può essere effettuata in modo naturale con apposite canalizzazioni in superficie oppure mettendo in funzione sistemi artificiali.
I ricoveri devono avere almeno due imbocchi ben occultati all’osservazione nemica. All’interno vengono costruiti dei tavolacci di legno ad uno o più strati per dare comodo giaciglio agli uomini. La capienza del ricovero è indicata nelle carte militari con un numero posto accanto al segno convenzionale che identifica il manufatto.

This cave is really the entrance to a tunnel which was a munitions store during WWI, and is on Trail 7 of the walks around Sasso Cavallasca – Military tactic and defence strategies – which is a pleasant 2 hour walk. If you wish to know more, I recommend the Spina Verde website (in Italian). http://www.spinaverde.it/index.php?pag=279 . Some of the walk is on paved road, but most is on trails, so sensible footwear is recommended. This cache can be reached by road, but parking is severely limited and the road itself is only open to vehicles at certain times (see photo) as it only leads up to the restaurant L’Agrifoglio near the top. If you want to eat at the restaurant you can park your car there and leave it while you walk, but the place is highly popular (with great views of Monte Rosa and the Padana plain) so you’d need to book in advance. It’s best to park in Cavallasca by the town hall and walk up the hill or leave the car at WP1.
The cave is usually damp inside, so watch your feet when you venture in, and mind the dragon, unless she’s gone out for her weekly shop!
Given the tree cover and cave, the GPS coordinates are as accurate as I can get them – just look very carefully. The cache has no room for swaps or a pencil, so please bring your own. Please return the cache to the exact position you find it in. Don’t forget to copy down the numbers for the bonus cache.
THE SHELTER
There are numerous shelters of various sizes all over Sasso Cavallasca, but not all are open to visitors as a result of landslips that have blocked the entrances.
The main shelter, called "Gallery Store", with an opening on the main military Cavallasca to Cavallasca-Sasso road, a little above the former barracks of the Finance Police, is carved into the gonfolite (the rock of which the Spina Verde hill is composed of) and consists of a rectangular room, with a conical roof, at the bottom of which opens a passageway that leads into a trench for direct communication to the workstations of Maiocca.
The shelters were used to provide shelter and rest for the soldiers who served in the trenches, either fighting or waiting to go into action, and to protect and preserve materials and ammunition. They were usually dug into the back of the hills.
The shelters can be in a cave, if they’re dug directly into the rock, or in a tunnel if they’re excavated from earth of various types and then coated in appropriate materials to prevent the dripping of water due to leakage. The percolated water, collected in small channels dug along the walls of the shelter, is then carried outside.
Much attention was dedicated to ventilation, which was done naturally with special ducts in the surface or by operating artificial systems. The shelters had to have at least two well-concealed entrances for enemy observation. Inside were layered wooden cots to give the men a cozy place to rest. The capacity of the shelter is marked on the military maps with a number next to the checkmark that identifies the remains.
