So, you're looking for this cache. Congratulations---In this location, a hundred and fifty years ago, you'd have been underwater.
This spot is where the canal basin used to be. The Bald Eagle Cross Cut Canal was constructed from 1828 to 1834. It came from the Susquehanna River to the north, and cut across town through a series of locks and footbridges. This area once was used as a sort of parking lot for canal boats, a wide area where the canal water opened up into a huge, man-made pool. Lights, horns, and conch shells were used as signals to the canal workers. Lock Haven, in fact, was named for the canal locks.
To the north of here, near the river, is Canal Park, which still contains the remains of a canal lock. To the northeast is the site of the 1833 canal riot, which happened when Irish and German canal workers got fed up and attacked one another one summer day.
The canal was eventually put out of business by the railroads, which had the advantages of being faster, more efficient, and easier to use in winter. The flood of 1889 basically ended the remains of any canal use in the area.
