Hi_SacCity_Iowa_Here Is 58!!! How could Hi Sac get so lucky to have such a Mega Geocaching Event to help celebrate his 58th Birthday on April 28th? Hi Sac or Rick became a cacher after his oldest son loaded a set of coords in a gps that we happen to bring home in a box of handheld games when we cleaned out my parent’s house after they passed. Oldest son, youngest son & youngest son's girlfriend went to search. A short while later they returned after finding the cache. (River Rapids Lookout GCNPRO) About 1.2 miles from our house. After hearing that they really do exist he got interested. I had told him about geocaching a year earlier when there was a cache located .1 mile from our house. (Solitude In Sac City Archived 5/2007) His oldest son has become a cacher. He likes to inform people how he got involved in caching and how he got his dad involved when I couldn't get him interested. Has been a running joke between us. Rick became official cacher July 7 2007. His first find was Grandpas Cache GCN3NG on July 16th 2007. He placed his first hide on July 26 2007 Hagge Park Hideaway GC14NAT. That first year he scored 57 caches and placing 3 more hides. Caches that he put some thought and time into making the finder search a little. He was so happy with the feedback on these hides, especially when a cacher that he admired gave him praise. There were times I had to threaten to get a pushpin out to pop his inflated head, wasn't enough room to breathe. I should have signed up when he did because I was with him on all finds but 11 which he was with his son. (Son of Hi Sac). I had the job of photographer to record finds. In April of 2008 I was Bagtown Girl. SAC--BAG CITY---TOWN get it? Yeah, I know! 2008 was a great year to become a member. IGO 5th Annual Hike & Seek was being hosted close to home. Sadly only other event we attended that year was a WWFM held is Sioux City dubbed "Thinging in The Rain". The HnS event was a blast. We signed in to compete not knowing that we so far in over our heads even before we started. We were aware that we would not win but wanted to keep track of how we did do. We did score 1 or 2 FTF & STF tokens to take back to claim. That was a high 5 moment for us. We got to meet some "famous Iowa cachers" at this event. I was finally able to put a face with some of the stories that was coming out of the 515 area. The event was hosted by NVG. As far as I know he single handily put out at least 99% of the caches places for this event. NVG is one of the cachers that Rick admires a lot. He likes the idea of making the cacher do a little work for scoring a smiley and having searched for some of his hides Rick really likes the way he thinks. There have been more fun finds along the way but it will take someone special to knock NVG of his pedestal. Without the inspiration of fellow cachers Rick would not have as many hides or finds as he does. I think it was about late 2008 or early 2009 Rick always joked that he was going to put "Sac" on the geocaching map. He held his first event cache in 2009. It was WWFM #4. He also placed 18 caches this year still joking that he was getting enough caches out in Sac that it would be worth the time to spend a few hours in Sac City looking for caches. This was also the year that he decided that he would only place a hide in Sac County. He has passed several opportunities to hide a cache "in a perfect spot" just because it was not in Sac County. By the end of 2009 he had about 30 caches hid around Sac City. In 2009 we attended our second IGO HnS event. It was another great time. One day last year I was looking at the geocaching map I came across a geotrail that when it was placed it was in the shape of a cross. When I showed it to Rick it was all it took. He knew how he was going to put Sac on the map. Funny thing was at the time he hadn’t realized he was going to make his “geodream” come true. After looking at a map of Sac County we realized it was easier said than done. But with a little help from his “beautiful bride-me” he placed 47 caches to spell out SAC. After it was all published I jokingly said something about finally actually putting Sac on the map. His reaction was priceless, you could see that it just actually dawned on him and then he just started grinning. It was only about 5 minutes later that I was threatening to get my pushpin out. Thank you for this opportunity. This cache is my birthday gift to him I just have to keep it a secret now. Another easier said than done time. I have been with him over 25 years so if I know it he knows it, but at his age sometimes he don’t remember he knows it. (Sorry hun, I had to get one dig in.) How many people get the chance to celebrate their birthday doing what they really enjoy with hundreds of other people that enjoy the same thing? BUT this event may provide another milestone for him, as I write this he is only 112 caches away from his 1000th find. I’m sure it would be one he couldn’t forget EVER.
