Geocache Description:

Cache is not at posted coordinates, posted coordinates are about 95 meters off, or a bit over 300 feet. Read the long description for detail's.

This is a Mt Hood snowshoeing adventure. We headed out today looking for powder snow to snowshoe in and we found it. It was great fun to get out and just wander through the forest. Somehow it's easier to wander in the snow, when all this white stuff melts the caches may be inaccessible.

Recently I had the pleasure to attend a seminar put on by a member of PMR (Portland Mountain Rescue). They handed out a card with GPS coordinates for points up on Mt Hood. One thing I noticed about there coordinates beyond being in UTM, was that they were in “NAD 27 CONUS”. Where as we use “WGS 84”, which is closely matched to “NAD 83 CONUS”. Why you ask, I don’t know for sure but I bet it has to do with money, it being expensive to convert all the maps over.

Anyway in Mt Hood tradition, posted coordinates are NAD27 CONTINENTAL US DATUM, you'll need to convert them to the datum of your choice to find this one. You're looking for a BLUE Nalgene bottle hanging in a smaller tree, about four to five feet high (depending on snow height). You'll have to work for this one, but it'll be fun. You will be south of the White River snow park. I couldn’t find a trail that starts directly from there, but have provided a waypoint for a trail junction as a good reference point. You will need a Sno-Park permit to park there.

I had to make sure it wasn't in the wilderness. If you want information on wilderness boundary's check out (visit link) they have maps you can load and install on your Garmin GPSr. If you have a newer one these will work as an overlay. This is what I use to keep my caches clear of the Wilderness areas.
