Kenaga-gawa is a river flows in Saitama Prefecture Soka City, Kawaguchi City, and Tokyo Adachi Ward. And it joins the Ayase River in Adachi Ward.
It is such roughly feeling though various opinions are in the origin of the name of Kenaga-gawa.
The old times. A beautiful woman who had a long hair lived in Nissato Village. The woman married a man who lived in Toneri Village in the other side shore in the marsh(river). However, the woman was not able to become the man's family happily. Because of that, the woman jumped into the marsh(river) and committed suicide. And only a long hair was found in the shore one day, this was enshrined to a shrine in Nissato, and it became a present Kenaga-jinjya. It is assumed that it came to call this river Kenaga-gawa since then.
毛長川は、流域延長約9.7kmの埼玉県草加市、川口市と東京都足立区を流れて綾瀬川に合流する河川です。
毛長川の名前の由来は、諸説ありますが、だいたいこのような感じです。
その昔、新里村に住んでいた髪の長い美しい女性が、対岸の舎人村に住む男性と結婚しました。その後、男性の実家と折りが合わず新里の実家に帰る途中に、悲しみのあまり沼(川)に身を投げてしまいました。そしてある日、岸辺に長い髪の毛だけが見つかり、これを新里の神社に祀り、現在の毛長神社となりました。それ以来この川を毛長川と呼ぶようになったとされています。
毛長神社の創建は不詳ですが、ご神体に「女性の長い髪」を祀る全国でも珍しい神社です。
