Geocache Description:

A revival of the Twa Lads on Crooked Edge Hill
This cache is a direct replacement for the original Twa Lads cache, but ranks as a new cache.

Located on exposed moorland above Horwich; appropriate clothing and footwear recommended.

The 'Twa Lads' have many myths about their origins. Some say that they commemorate two sons of Bishop Pilkington who became lost on the moor, died, and were buried here.

Others say that it is a burial mound marking the site where the sons of a Saxon King were buried.

However, John Winstanley, founder of the Chorley Historical and Archaeological Society, after having studied the area in 1953 noted in his diary several archaeological finds, namely Roman glass, flints and what he believed to be a Roman burial slab. It was Winstanley's opinion, and still to date a valid conclusion, that the cairns mark the site of a small Roman encampment; it certainly has a commanding view.

The Twa Lads are popular with walkers, and there is almost always someone around. So, please use stealth when retrieving and replacing the cache, which is concealed just a short way from the large summit cairn.

Getting there: You can drive up the service road to Winter Hill as far as a parking area on the right, just before a cattle grid. Please do not drive any further. Or you can park down near Wilderswood, and take in the other caches in this area: GC29YK7 (Mountain mine); GC2N87B (Breathe), and GC3DPGF (In Between).
