Heaven's Gate (Wilts) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: Yep, it was still there [}:)].

However, recent reports of ticks and the much reduced frquency of finds made me think that it's time to archive this one.

When this cache was placed in March 2002, it was the only cache for a huge radius, about 25 miles. Early visitors travelled considerable distances to find it and the finders list reads like a who's who of the early players including ex and current UK Reviewers. Some people struggled to find it, partly due to it being a very unusual Womble hiding place - a natural recess in an overhanging hillside. Recent bracken growth made it harder still and brought the dreaded ticks.

This cache has earned honorable retirement and the ammo box will be recycled elsewhere in due course.

Thanks to everyone who visited and happy caching.

Geocache Description:

This cache has excellent views of Longleat house and the Wiltshire countryside. The last 100m is not suitable for younger children because it requires a climb down (and up) a steep hillside. Boots or wellies essential after wet weather.

This cache is adjacent to Longleat Safari park, Longleat House and Centre Parcs. It involves a walk of around 900m from the nearest car park at Nockatt Coppice, N51°10.778', W02°14.853'. Boots and wellies are essential because the paths are very muddy, and the final part of the challenge is a steep (1 in 1) hill which could be treacherous after wet weather.

Heavens Gate refers to the view point which has excellent views and a surprise all of its own.

The initial contents of the cache were on an environmental theme to suit its location next to the Safari Park (the first Safari Park outside Africa) and Centre Parcs.

This would be a suitable addition to a visit to either the Longleat Safari Park (check out this web site) or Centre Parcs (as we did, check out this web site). Alternatively, our other caches at Lacock, Castle Coombe and Bath are all roughly a half hour drive.

An Ordnance Survey map for the location is available at this web site.
