Geocache Description:

CACHE WAS REPLACED 30/7/2017 The cache is one in a series of Athene Noctua caches that are all named after the small owl that is frequently observed around our house in Cyprus. It is an easy cache and has the aim to bring you to this beautiful village and we hope that you will spend some time there. Kritou Tera or as we call it the "yellow village" is best visited in spring when the whole village is is full bloom. Please always respect both the people living in the area and the nature.

We fell in love with the village Kritou Tera when we first spotted it during spring and the whole village was in full bloom. Just outside the village wild orchids can be spotted along the road side. The village houses the Environmental Studies Centre. Some of the information from the ESC site was used. The village experienced a significant decline in population (reduced from over 800 to under 100 within one generation) due to emigration overseas and the lure of jobs in the major urban centres and tourist resorts. The village is still famous for its magnificent church of Chryseleousa (19th century), and the ancient French-Byzantine church of Ayia Ekaterini. Stroll through the streets of this ancient village, stopping at the unique Washing Holes (Plystario) used by womenfolk in the past, then drop in to village restaurant for light refreshment and food, including vegetarian, in a delightful setting. After the meal, take a short walk to the old water mill and its rich springs. Incidentally, it is said that the first casino ever was built in Kritou Terra. No more than a coffee shop where people could play cards for money and watch the imported dancers perform, this building nevertheless is now an ancient monument.
