Don't let the bogle get you!
The term 'bogle', referring to a Scottish goblin, has been used as far back as the 16th Century. A Bogey-man, now Boogey man in North America, was a widely used term for a goblin or devil.
In the 1890's golf players in England began standardizing the number of shots a good golfer should be able to make for each hole. This was called the ground score. This idea became widely accepted and during one early competition, one golfer, a Mr. CA Wellman, commented to Dr. Browne, secretary of the Great Yarmouth Club, that " This player of yours is a regular Bogey man," referring to a popular Edwardian music hall song "Hush! Hush! Hush! Here Comes the Bogey Man." Almost immediately the ground score in golf became known as the Bogey score.
We are hoping no bogles hinder your attempt to find this little cache!
