This is a tribute to the hard working coal miners of this region. The remains of the actual Cascade Coal Mine & Coke Works can been seen just across the road in the now Kovalchick Salvage yard. This mine operated from 1904-1939. A large, tragic explosion occurred in July of 1911. At its peak production, 500 men were on the payroll. Millions of dollars came in to the community in pay envelopes during the 36 year period. It was hailed as one of the best "pockets" in the region. You can further read about this and other Jefferson County mines as well as other counties of Pennsylvania at www.patheoldminer.rootsweb.ancestry.com.
