Former Northside Drive Landfill
April is Earth Month. To celebrate, we are placing caches at several formerly environmentally contaminated sites around Atlanta. These abandoned sites, known as brownfields, once contained harmful levels of chemicals. After remediation, these sites have the potential to be reused in a beneficial way.
This site was used as a dump for railroad and manufactured gas plants before the 1930's. In 1942, the Herndon Homes public housing project began construction, eventually 273 apartments were built onsite. The apartments were demolished between 2002 and 2010.
Soil at the site was contaminated with berylium, petroleum hydrocarbons, and lead. The site was cleaned up using a combination of excavation and engineering controls from 2002 to 2005. The area is now used as a parking lot for the Georgia World Congress Center and the Georgia Dome (and a possible location of the new Falcons Stadium.)
