Geocache Description:

A walk in nice forest with a slightly unusal ending. Total length 800 meter back and forth. Landowner notified of cache.

In 1905 the blacksmith in Västra Vram, Johan Friberg, feared that war would break out between Sweden and Norway. In order to feed his household of 13 people he bought a farm in nearby Sandhusen where this narrow piece of land was included. At that time the vegetation consisted mainly of juniper shrubs, grass and some scattered trees. This and the surrounding areas were used for feeding animals.

A few hundred meters up this narrow piece of land you will see two parallel stone walls crossing the land. Every morning and evening the farmers led their cattle between their farm in Västra Vram and their own piece of land up here.

War never broke out. The conflict was solved by canceling the Swedish-Norwegian union and Norway became an independent nation after 417 years of union with Denmark and 91 years of union with Sweden.

A few years later, the risk of war was once more increasing and in 1913 Gunnar, the oldest son of Johan decided to emigrate to USA to avoid being drafted as soldier. The irony of fate however played him a joke. Sweden remained outside World War I and in 1918 he sat on a warship on his way back to Europe as an American soldier. But the war ended before they arrived and the ship turned around.

The landowners of 1953 (Sture Friberg, the ninth and last child of Johan)
