De geschiedenis van Sint-Lucas gaat terug tot 1862, toen o.a. de kunstenaar Jean-Baptiste Bethune aan de Broeders van de Christelijke Scholen vroeg om in Gent tekenlessen te organiseren.
Algauw werd Gent de bakermat van waaruit naar een nationaal net van katholieke kunstscholen werd gestreefd. De inspiratiebron was de neogotische beweging met aandacht voor de grootse synthese van de westerse christelijke cultuur, waarin alle kunsten en ambachten waren geïntegreerd. De broeders ontwikkelden een eigen onderwijspedagogiek die speciaal was afgestemd op het opleiden van ambachtslui en beoefenaars van de nijverheidskunst, twee beroepscategorieën waar grote nood aan was tijdens de eerste jaren van de zich ontwikkelende industriële maatschappij. Behalve een 'stijl' betekende de neogotische beweging ook een visie op mens, kunst en ambacht en gaf ze ook de aanzet tot latere moderne kunststromingen. Door de tijd heen heeft het Sint-Lucasonderwijs vanzelfsprekend allerlei metamorfosen ondergaan. Het zijn de veranderingen en vernieuwingen van elke schoolgemeenschap die met haar tijd meeleeft en daarin werkzaam wil blijven.
Sedert 1862 biedt Sint-Lucas kunstonderwijs aan in Gent. Wat in de 19de eeuw begon als een kleine school waar voornamelijk tekenlessen werden gegeven, is nu uitgegroeid tot een hoger onderwijsinstelling waar studenten de diepgang en de intrinsieke traagheid van de kunstbeoefening combineren met het experiment en de kennis van de jongste ontwikkelingen in de media en technologie.

The history of Sint-Lucas goes back to 1862, when including the artist Jean-Baptiste Bethune to the brothers of the Christian schools early to organise drawing lessons in Ghent.
