As you walk around Roseberry Common you may notice lots of pits and depressions. Their origins are a source of great debate for local archaeologists.
There is a ring of pits at around 235m altitude that are likely to be the remains of excavations for jet and ironstone. There are also series of pits at 245m and 200m high that are not close to any valuable minerals. There are many theories as to what these were used for.
Perhaps they were once home to prehistoric families. Alternatively they could be where ancient man once waited with bows and arrows, ready to defend their sacred hill. They could even have been used as sites for performing religious rituals. We may never know for sure…
