Geocache Description:

The National Trust's Roseberry Romp

This series of caches will take you on a circular walk around Roseberry Topping of around 5 miles. Some caches are small and well hidden, while others are large with plenty of room for swaps.

The National Trust is a charity that protects special places in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, for ever, for everyone

As you walk around Roseberry Common you may notice lots of pits and depressions. Their origins are a source of great debate for local archaeologists.

There is a ring of pits at around 235m altitude that are likely to be the remains of excavations for jet and ironstone. There are also series of pits at 245m and 200m high that are not close to any valuable minerals. There are many theories as to what these were used for.

Perhaps they were once home to prehistoric families. Alternatively they could be where ancient man once waited with bows and arrows, ready to defend their sacred hill. They could even have been used as sites for performing religious rituals. We may never know for sure…

This small cache with some room for swaps, travelbugs or geocoins. You'll need to bring your own pen.
