THE AKERS
To celebrate my 3000th cache I have placed a series of 11 caches around The Akers.
Thanks to the Akers management who gave permission for the series.
The series varies in difficulty and terrain you will need your wellies on number 6.
If you don’t wish to cross the river the route between 3 and 4 is back to the towpath and follow the footpath the other side.
By the time of the demise of the BSA in the late 1970s, much of the site had deteriorated into an overgrown post-industrial tip, well frequented by local children in search of adventure. A project was set up in 1978 by Oldknow Road School in Small Heath as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The school closed in 1983 and the project was eventually taken on by the City Council under the leadership of a trust. Some 20 hectares were set aside to be known as The Ackers.
The name was taken from the colloquial name for the area, the Ackerducks, which was usually abbreviated to Ackers. The name derives from the word ‘aqueducts' though which they are is uncertain. The canal aqueduct crosses the Spark Brook and the Cole via an aqueduct, but the term was used probably used, incorrectly, with reference to the North Warwickshire Railway viaducts which are more obvious features.
The Ackers Centre was formally opened in 1985 and now covers an area of some 30ha. On offer are outdoor adventurous activities including skiing, snowboarding, climbing, ropes courses, canoeing, kayaking, bellboating, archery, team challenge days, management training and human resource development courses, orienteering, 4-wheel-drive course, narrow boat hire and more.
A detailed orienteering map can be purchased from the ski Centre when open
You can always gain access to The Akers by foot The main entrance in Golden Hillock Road is open all the time but access to the parking areas by the ski centre is restricted to opening hours.
