A quick cache and dash at Kiltonga Nature Reserve aka 'The Duck Pond'. Cunning stealth tactics required.
Kiltonga Nature Reserve, known locally to Ards folk as ‘The Duck Pond’ is located a short distance outside Newtownards town centre.
There are ample parking spaces available close to GZ.
The nature reserve is very popular with families. At the main parking area there is a viewing platform where you can feed a wide variety of wildfowl including ducks, geese and swans so be sure to bring a loaf of bread. There is also a nice flat 600m circular walk around the nature reserve which offers some pleasant views over towards Scrabo Tower. There are also plenty of seats to stop, rest and take in the views along with a few picnic tables to enjoy a snack. The route round the nature reserve is wheelchair friendly but getting to the cache requires a reach and thus wouldn't be suitable for wheelchair users. During summer, an ice-cream van tends to park nearby in the car park so you can enjoy a wee pick-me-up.
The cache is a magnetic nano, it contains only a log so please bring your own pen/pencil. I have given it a difficulty rating of 2 as it is an extremely public area and thus cunning stealth tactics are required. The seasoned geocacher will know the best way to approach this cache without drawing too much attention to themselves. Please put the cache back exactly how you got it. You may want to move elsewhere to sign the log and return to replace it.
