This cache is located at the end of the road in Kokee, at Puu o Kila Lookout. Stop to enjoy the great view and find the cache!
Well, if you're staying in Princeville, and you want to find a shorter route to Kokee, you're out of luck. There is only one way to get to Kokee from there, drive some 70 miles EACH-WAY, around the entire island, through Kapaa and Lihue, Kalaheo and Waimea, and back again. But after you see the view, you know it was worth the drive!
They tried to build a road to the North Shore through the swamp in the 50's, but the rainy weather prevented them from completing the task, and they simply abandoned it. If you have ever hiked the Pihea Trail from here, you are following the abandoned road.
Even though there is the Kalalau Lookout before this one, take my word for it and drive the extra mile to get here. The view of the valley is even better than the first lookout! If the clouds have cleared, you'll be treated to an amazing sight-Kalalau Valley, with waterfalls streaking down its cliffs, and the ocean in the distance. However, if the clouds come in and the valley is a no-show, just enjoy the serene silence, interrupted only by the constant buzzing of helicopters, and the ocean waves crashing a mile below you.
Keep in mind that this is quite near Mount Waialeale, the wettest place on earth. Please remember to lock the cache completely before you leave.
Here's how to get to the cache, take the concrete ramp up from the parking lot. Just when the path makes a switch-back, look south a few yards to an Ohia Lehua tree where the cache is hidden within the roots. This is just below the main lookout platform. Because of the cloud-cover the coords may be a bit off, but please remember that you do not have to go more than one or two yards off the trail to make the find. Please take the spoilers with you!
Congratulations to Alpha6 and KidsRN to a great FTF!
