B.I.W. (Hardings Plant)
Most of you might know where BIW (Bath Iron Works) is in Bath Maine. It' kind of hard to miss it as your driving across the Bath, Woolwich bridge on Route 1 with that BIG red and white crane that sticks out as you drive by. But you might not know that the building behind this Geocache is also BIW. This is BIW's Harding’s Plant where a new ships life really begins. This is where large sheets of steel come in on rail road cars or tractor trailers to be cut into all the parts needed to make a ship. All the large or heavy newly cut parts are marked with special numbers and stored somewhere in the yard with a crane. When the parts are needed the computer tells where they were stored and the crane crew picks them up to be worked on here at Hardings or loaded onto a tractor trailer and shipped to Bath to be put together there. If you want to know how come I know all about this, it's because I am one of the crane operators at the Hardings plant.
** Congratulations to LMB1 for the FTF! **
