Geocache Description:

Easy park and grab. You'll need to get out of the car, but only a couple of steps.

The desolate WestGate shopping mall was the center of commerce on the West side of Great Falls 45 years ago. It was anchored by the now defunct Buttrey grocery-- the only real grocery store on the West side at the time, and included a sporting goods store, pharmacy, and a bunch of other shops. In the 80's Buttrey moved to a different location, and the mall never recovered.

The mall's owner kicked all the tenants out sometime around 2000 to (supposedly) make way for a big sporting goods super store, but that deal fell through. After that, it fell into worse repair while various stores came and went. All the tenants were again ordered out in April 2011, and the owners announced that the building would be razed within 2 months--they claimed the building was in such poor shape that it made more sense to tear it down than to fix it. Two years later, the building is still standing. It was purchased by Montana Refining Company in November of 2011. In an interview Feb 2012 MRC stated they had no long range plan for the building, and were mostly using it for storage.

The last remaining business relocated across the street in November of 2012, so it likely won't be standing for long.
