Geocache Description:


天平１８（７４６）年、聖武天皇の帰依仏である観音像を奉じて行基により開かれたと言われています。寛弘年間に焼失し、仁平４（１１５４）年、河内の豪族八戸重忠によって再興されました。
　 江戸時代の初めにはＪＲ西谷踏切までのこの谷一帯が寺域でたくさんの伽藍を有していましたが次第に衰退していきました。
　明治時代になると政府の神仏分離令により、椎尾大明神として寺院より神社となり現在に至っています。現在の椎尾神社の祭神は素戔嗚命、聖武天皇、後鳥羽天皇となっています。（島本町設置案内文より）
サントリーウイスキー工場のすぐ北隣にあります。サントリーの工場見学の前または後に立ち寄るといいでしょう。
小さな水車もあります。
