A golden ammo can in (very belated) recognition of Birder428's 1000th cache find.
Birder428 and her husband Hawk Hollow burst onto the Dutchess County geocaching scene in the summer of 2009, and have transformed the local caching landscape. They have hidden dozens of caches for the entertainment of the rest of us, and their zeal in pursuing early morning first-to-find opportunities is legendary.
Thanks to Birder428's efforts, the 909 has become a caching Mecca, so there was really only one place to hide this tribute. Birder's preferences in cache locations are well documented: Nice flat terrain, with a convenient place to sit and log the find. I regret to say that this cache has only one of those attributes. The approach does at least offer an occluded view to the west, which however will be completely obscured when the foliage returns.
The cache itself is about 50 yards off the yellow trail (for all the good that will do, since as anyone who has cached in the 909 knows well, none of the trails go anywhere in particular). It should be a very straightforward find, as it's in an obvious spot and is camouflaged in the traditional, not-found-in-Nature sort of way.
As for the ornamentation on the container - well, John James Audubon has nothing to fear from me.
On behalf of the local geocaching community - thanks, Birder and Hawk!
