Geocache Description:

Named the 'Sacred Heart and St Francis' now, this church updated its name in recent years. St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Walton-on-the-Naze was closed and then sold, and two became one.

This Church building, started life as a theatre, I believe. My parents were married here in this Church in 1957. I and my siblings were christened here, I had my first communion and confirmation here and we had my fathers funeral here. I have never yet been married here!!!! I remember well, sitting up in the balcony during mass, following the service, but also viewing the ladies 'unusual' array of hats! The insides of the Church have been considerably modified over the last few years. Gone is the grand Canopy over the altar. In came carpeting, central heating, chairs in place of pews and new windows. But the most noticeable difference in my opinion, is the whole new extension to the front. St Francis of Assisi in Walton, was the church we went to in the summer, as the service was earlier, and we went straight down the beach at the end of the service. I remember the holidaymakers packing the small 'village hall' type building in the summers, and the surplice congregation standing in the pretty little garden, following the service with the french door at the side open. “If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication. There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list”
