The original Quitman Depot was built circa 1855 on land given to the Mobile and Ohio Railroad by Mary Milliford in May 1853. The railroad became an important asset to Quitman and Clarke County.
On February 14, 1864 federal forces under General W.T. Sherman arrived in the county, burned the depot, the county courthouse, and the railroad trestle south of Quitman.
Research indicates the current depot was built between 1864 and 1870.
Active railroad operations from this depot ceased in 1970. By 1990 the building had become little more than a decayed trellis for vines, briars, and poison ivy. Restoration was completed in July 1999 and it is now currently home to the Clarke County Chamber of Commerce.
