Geocache Description:

This is a park-and-grab multi-cache that should take only 5 minutes or so to complete.

It is the third of a series to be put out celebrating the ghosts of the Barnet area, of which there are surprisingly many! If you prefer to do your ghost hunting after dark, then this is available 24/7, but you will need a torch to help you.

Parking for this cache can be found directly opposite the starting co-ordinates in a pay-and-display car park.

WAYPOINT #1 - N 51° 39.143, W 000° 11.941

The start of your journey is directly outside a well known pub in the Barnet area.

This pub has had its share of ghostly stories and tales of horror. A tale is told that in the 18th Century an 18-year old girl was staying at the pub. She opened a wardrobe door to have a corpse fall on top of her. The guest who had stayed in the room the previous night had apparently died and had been hidden in the wardrobe because the staff had not been bothered to arrange for the collection of the body. This all sounds very Basil Fawlty to me and there is no actual ghost here, so I shall move on.

In the 1980's, a barmaid working at the pub complained about hearing strange noises in the middle of the night. Later on, she saw a wolf-like creature go down the stairs, though the bar area and out of the front door.

At around the same time there were other strange things going on, so the manager decided to call a medium. He came to the property and told the manager the pub was haunted by the ghost of Maggie Entwistle, a blacksmith's daughter who died there in 1766. She had heard two guests making lewd comments about her, and so followed them back to their room and continued to eavesdrop on their conversation outside their door. Alas, she was discovered, and in her flight to get away from them fell down the stairs and was killed. Some say she was pushed. The medium performed an exorcism, and the strange happenings stopped.

Poor Maggie is not the only ghost to haunt the area, however. There is also the "Grey Lady". This is said to be the ghost of a woman who abandoned her baby at the Guyscliffe Childrens' Home which next door to the pub. The Grey Lady is said to always be seen clutching a baby in her arms.

Apparently a motorist once ran over the Grey Lady as he was driving. He herd a thud as he hit her, but when he got out of his car no-one was there. Terribly shaken, he went to the police station to report the incident, but all the police could do was to try and calm him down.

Unless there is a ghost in my GPS machine, the starting co-ordinates for this cache will take you to just outside a side door to the pub. Just above this door is a windowlight with painted iron feature in it. This ironwork is effectively made up of Roman Numerals. What numbers do those Roman Numerals signify today? The answer is AB.

Take a few steps back towards the road, and then turn round and look at the building again. Just to the left of the doorway the building juts out a little, and there are three more iron grilles at about the same height, all in a row. How many square and rectangular holes do each of these grilles have (ie count all the square or rectangular holes in one of these grilles to get your answer). The answer is CD.
