Ahrdorf 2: Railway bridge Ahbach near Ahrdorf

The cache is located in an official protected landscape. Do not leave the official paths!
The Eifel has a rich railway history. Unfortunately, most of the lines are closed and the rail has been removed. Ahrdorf station was once an important station. Ahrdorf was a stop on the railway line from Dümpelfeld to Lissendorf and the railway line Blankenheim-Wald to Ahrdorf connected to this line in Ahrdorf. The line Dümpelfeld - Lissendorf was opened in 1912 and the line between Ahrdorf and Blankenheim-Wald was put into service in 1913. At the end of the 1930's up to 1945, station Ahrdorf had 6 tracks. In 1958 the last train drove from Ahrdorf to Blankenheim-Wald. In 1973 the last train drove on the line Dümpelfeld - Lissendorf. Much more information about the railway history can be found, in German, at www.ahrdorf.de und www.ahrtalbahn.de

This cache is located near the railway bridge over the Ahbach. The railway line from Dümpelfeld to Lissendorf once passed this bridge. Two tracks and a switch were on the bridge. In the direction of Ahrdorf station the railway split within a short distance from the bridge into four tracks. In the opposite direction one track split towards the loading platform of the basalt quarry of Hoffeld. The best way to approach the bridge is via the cycling path which starts at the L167 (road in the direction Kelberg) just after the bridge of this road over the Ahbach. One gets from the cycling path a good view on the bridge. The cycling path is part of the Ahrtal Radweg which mainly follows old railway tracks. The Ahrtal Radweg starts in Blankenheim where the well of the river Ahr is located and ends in Sinzig where the river Ahr flows in the river Rhine.
