Prosopis pallida is a perennial that belongs to the Mimosoideae subfamily (mesquite, mimosa) of the Leguminosae/Fabaceae family. It is commonly referred to by its Hawaiian name “kiawe” (pronounced “kee-AH-vay”).
Kiawe trees are native to the coast of northwestern South America. In 1828 they were introduced in the Hawaiian Islands by Father Alexis Bachelot, the head of the first Catholic mission to Hawaii.
Kiawe trees were originally introduced as an agent to control soil erosion. They became a pest species, invading, competing, and overwhelming native grass species and woody plants.
Be careful of their nasty thorns that are strong and sharp enough to pierce the soles of your shoes.
Beware of muggles and please rehide and cover cache well. The cache is about 40 feet off the beachwalk. Bring a writing implement.
