L'opera si chiama Primi passi 2009, ed è stata realizzata nel 2009 da Mauro Staccioli nell'ambito della mostra Luoghi d'esperienza. Staccioli ha realizzato una serie di installazioni, ambientate nel paesaggio, che formano una sorta di anello attorno a Volterra. Queste opere vogliono mettere in evidenza luoghi e tempi legati sia all'identità stessa della comunità, sia alle esperienze personali dell'infanzia dell'artista. L'ellisse, in particolare, incornicia un panorama che va da Montebrandoni (dove Staccioli ha trascorso la giovinezza) fino alla chiesa di San Giusto e al profilo di Volterra, mettendo in primo piano un vecchio casolare da tempo abbandonato, la casa dei nonni materni. L'opera è realizzata in acciaio corten (materiale che ossidandosi con l'aria si ricopre di una patina protettiva color bruno), e misura cm 805x1300x40. Si arriva sul posto tranquillamente in macchina.

The structure is called First Steps 2009, and was built in 2009 by Mauro Staccioli within the exhibition Sites of experience. Staccioli has made a series of installations, set in the landscape, forming a sort of ring around Volterra. These works want to point out places and times related to the real identity of the community, and to the artist's personal experiences of childhood. The ellipse, in particular, framing a view that stretches from Montebrandoni (where Staccioli spent his youth) to the church of San Giusto and the profile of Volterra, foregrounding an old house, where his maternal grandparents lived. The sculpture is made of Corten steel (material that oxidizes with the air is covered with a brown patina), and measure 805x1300x40 cm. You can reach the place by car without problems.
