New Zealanders hold dear the freedoms we have in our country today. We have past unsung heroes, ordinary kiwis, to thank for them, as they were willing to leave home and country and fight for our right to live as we wish. This cache is to remember them.
Eight months into the First World War, allied soldiers landed on the shores of the Gallipoli peninsula, which was Turkish and part of the Ottoman Empire, who were allies with Germany. It was not a military triumph, but caused great suffering to our small nation through the huge casaulties inflicted on our troops. This confilict did however, bring to the fore those attributes and attitudes New Zealanders are well known for: bravery, tenacity, practicality, ingenuity, and loyalty, which helped our nation to define who we are. The mutual respect earned during the fighting formed the basis of the close ties with Australia that continue today.
