We must begin with the story of the first known "Ghost of Bristol". Although not the scariest of stories, it's significance lies in being the first ghost sited in in the newly founded town. When you locate Stage I, you will be standing on the lot that was once the second store to operate in Bristol, VA, erected in 1853 and owned by John H. Moore. The Moore's residence was located on the back of the store with a smokehouse just outside the back door. After they moved in, a local "water witch" was hired to find a spot to dig a well. The chosen location was to the left of the little smokehouse... On an early November morning in 1854, Mrs. Moore grabbed a large butcher knife and headed out to the smokehouse to slice off some bacon for breakfast... What she saw.. stopped her dead in her tracks!!! She saw a large, tall Indian warrior just beside the smokehouse... In one hand he held a tomahawk high as if ready to attack.. and with the other hand he pointed toward the marker where the well would be placed... He looked very angry and was shaking his head, "NO"... as she stared in horror.. the Indian disappeared before her eyes... she ran screaming back inside.. and needless to say.. there was no bacon for breakfast that morning... Mr. Moore obviously was skeptical of his wife's "story" and proceeded with the plans to dig the well, in spite of her protests... so as his men were digging the well, imagine their surprise when six feet down they found an Indian grave with the skeletal remains of a very large, tall Indian! "Well".. they quickly filled back in the hole.. and there were no more sightings of the Indian... But they never did find the butcher knife that Mrs. Moore had carried outside... It vanished along with the Indian.... Now, get out there and play!!! :)
