Geocache Description:

Just outside of a favorite fishing spot whenever the oama are running!

This is the seventh cache of what I'm calling the 'Oscar'-series, dedicated to my first adventuring partner, my dad. Each cache in the series will be at various adventure spots that we shared over the years.

One can always tell when the oama are in town by the tons of anglers lined up along the shoreline armed with bamboo poles and handnets. Oama are baby goatfish that school in shallow waters in the hundreds, even thousands at times. Prized for live bait, they also quite tasty fried up w/ salt and pepper.

As kids, the whole family would head down to the pier during oama season (August, if I'm not mistaken). The adults would stand along the water with their poles and toss their catch up the embankment to us kids who would snatch them midair w/ our nets and place them in the buckets.

The cache itself is a camo'd small-sized container located outside of the Hilo Pier in front of the old Mauna Loa Plantation Store. I'm not sure, but I think they still hold a craft fair here on cruise ship days.
