Geocache Description:

Come join fellow cachers and water enthusiasts as we make our way down the Lower Saluda River. We will meet at River Banks Zoo Parking Lot at 10am (Coords listed). Parking is free.

We will have a quick round of introductions and then I will give a brief history of the area we are in and tell a little about the Saluda River we will be paddling on.

We will have a quick question & answer session for any new geocachers to the area then have a safety briefing before hitting the water.

The goal is to be in the water by 11:00am.

The take out will be at the Rosewood Landing at N 33 57.885 W 081 02.166. The expected time to get down the river is 4-6 hours. We will stop at Bird Island (N 34° 00.069 W 081° 03.658) and have lunch. There are also 13 other caches that can be grabbed along the way.

During the trip you will get to see many different aspects of the Saluda River.
-- You will pass over Class 1-3 rapids
-- You will experience the Confluence of the Saluda & Broad Rivers
-- You will pass through the Eastern Fall Line
-- You will pass through the Granby Lock & Dam
-- You will see an assortment of wildlife

The Saluda river can be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. If the river is too high or weather is bad, then the trip down the river will be canceled and we will reschedule. I will try to give advance notice of this. As always, have your PFD on and don't take unnecessary risks. We will also be crossing over some rapids and for that reason I do not recommend bringing a canoe.

If you have an extra kayak that someone can use, please indicate in your log.

I am also working on some return transportation back to the Zoo. So check back often. If you can help with transportation back to the zoo please let me know. Email me with any questions!

Bring lunch/snacks and plenty of water or other drinks!
